Library Project Concrete Contractor Replaced

The concrete contractor hired for the Booth Library Expansion Project has been

replaced due to "inadequate" work, according to Frank Krasnickas, Chairman of

Newtown's Public Building And Site Commission.

At the May 28 meeting of the commission, it was reported that the quality of

the footings poured by subcontractor H&H Construction was "acceptable but not

top quality." Forms had to be redone by the general contractor's workers, said

Mr Krasnickas. Some of the forms not readily visible were defective because

the supplementary plywood used was not properly reinforced, he said. This

resulted in bowing of the brick shelf above the foundation wall.

"The general contractor's workers are now chipping the excess concrete away. A

new subcontractor for concrete has been hired and will start next week," said

Mr Krasnickas. The general contractor for the library project, Building

Technologies Inc, had hired H&H Construction.

Although the problem has caused delays in the footing and foundation work, the

over all project is not behind schedule because the steel is not scheduled to

be delivered until the end of June or first week in July. "And the steel is

pacing the project," said Mr Krasnickas.
