Donna Howard probably will stop using her Roseville pottery vase as a doorstop

now that she knows it is worth $400 to $500.

That's what she learned last Saturday when the Sandy Hook merchants sponsored

a fall shopping day to benefit the Children's Department of the Booth Library.

Ms Howard, her mother Dorothy Howard and Pamela Pagant were among several

dozen residents who visited The Mill Antiques, bringing boxes and bags filled

with treasured - and not so treasured possessions - to find out how much they

might be worth.

Dan and Helen Howryletz of Taunton Lake Road were delighted when Dolores

Murphy, a certified appraiser and antique dealer from Clinton Corners, N.Y.,

told them their pair of running lights from the back of a carriage were worth

about $600, even though they have no plans to sell. Other participants also

were pleased.

"This is great because I've always wanted to come here and look at the

antiques but never seemed to get around to it," said Marilyn Radacsi of

Newtown, clutching a handful of coins, a family Bible and a porcelain statue

of Scarlet O'Hara from Gone With the Wind.

Many shoppers, including Diana Johnson and Margareta Kotch, stopped for brunch

at the Sandy Hook Diner where the daily specials were named after children's

books: Whinny the Pooh Pumpkin Pancakes with Honey Spice Syrup, Dr Seuss's

Green Eggs and Country Ham Steak, Nancy Drew's Mysterious Eggs Benedict.

Darryl Ifkovic's friendly sheepdog, Maggie, greeted visitors who browsed

amoung the fine art and prints at the Grey Horse Gallery. Rebecca Gellis of

Newtown helped her daughter, Elissa, try on chaps at the Woodstock Enterprises

Tack Shop while owner Catherine Fellows helped Meghan Kish of Oxford find the

right size riding boots.

Visitors who stopped at McLaughlin Vineyards were treated to a wine tasting

which included the vineyard's nouveau wine which was released for the

occasion.
