This week in 1991
After wrestling to a 15-9 record under coach Gordon Bleacher and finishing
second in the WCC as a result, the Newtown High wrestling team placed nine
wrestlers in the finals at the WCC Tournament. Of the nine only one, sophomore
Scott Baglio, was able to procure a league title. Baglio, wrestling at 112
pounds, defeated New Milford's Dave Mazzotta, 2-1 to earn the crown. Newtown
runners up included Brian Dickerson, Shawn Ertl, Craig Kolesar, Joe Melita,
Eric Lausten, Scott Kellerman, Matt Hawkins, and Josh Houghton.
This week in 1986
A Newtown parent named Bob Stampp conducted a survey at Newtown High School to
see if there was an interest in beginning a lacrosse team at the school.
Stampp's intention was to form a lacrosse club similar to the Newtown Ice
Hockey Club. As a result of his efforts, the Newtown High lacrosse program was
born.
This week in 1981
Pete Jamieson, Gary Schneider, and Jeff Miller all recorded pins and Mike Real
won a 9-0 decision, but the Newtown High wrestling team lost 34-22 to
Brookfield who in turn won the WCC title for a fourth-consecutive year under
its coach Bob Serrano. Newtown had won the three previous WCC crowns before
Brookfield's four-year run began.
This week in 1976
The Newtown High wrestling team toppled Brookfield 30-23 to successfully
defend the WCC Championship title. Newtown got wins from Brian Swanhall, Walt
Schneider, Roy Williams, Dan Watkins, Bob Tucciarone, and Dale Bryson in the
title contest.
This week in 1971
The Newtown Middle School's sixth-grade intramural basketball league title was
captured by the Snoopy Challengers who were led to a 4-1 record behind captain
Donna Cain. Other members of the championship team included Barb Hayes, Sue
Chubberty, Mary Frawley, Lisa Kellogg, Laura Nordman, Deb Provenzano, and
Karen Sullivan. The fifth grade tournament ended in a tie between Carol
Hensel's Globetrotters and the Snoopy Spectaculars led by Beverly Farkas. The
title was decided by a playoff game which the Globetrotters won, 7-2.
This week in 1966
The Newtown High boys' basketball team defeated Brookfield 91-53 to finish its
season with an 11-9 record under coach Louis Depaul. Newtown outscored its
opposition 1270-1179 during the year behind a balanced scoring attack which
was led by Jim Glover. Glover averaged 9.4 points per game during the season
while Bob McLaughlin averaged 8.1, and Jim Stiewing 7.5, and Steve Woodward
7.2. Rick Berglund and Don Bowers were also offensive contributors during the
season.
This week in 1961
George Tompkins scored 18 points and Jim Glover added 14 as the Blue Streaks
defeated the Trotters 41-7 to remain undefeated in the Newtown Junior High 7th
Grade Basketball League. The day's high scorer was Paul Nelson who dropped in
22 points to lead the Celtics to a 26-17 win over the Globetrotters in the 8th
grade league. The Celts were also unbeaten at 5-0.
This week in 1956
Wilton Lackaye, the director of the Boys' Social Athletic Club of Sandy Hook,
oversaw as A Sega and Sons of New Milford brought in its rigs to begin
excavation of a new pond at SAC Park on Riverside Road. The new pond was to be
75 feet by 200 and would add to the facilities at the widely-used park.
This week in 1951
Marvin Shredders scored eleven of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter
as the Newtown High boys' basketball team upset Abbott Tech, 38-35, handing
the Wolverines their first league loss in over three years. Bob Kingman added
ten points to the Newtown cause.
This week in 1946
Mary Lou Bradley tossed in 17 points, Shirley Shannon scored 14, and Nancy
Baxter added nine as the Hawley High girls' basketball team crushed Danbury
High 40-20 and kept its long winning streak in tact.
