The burly men who make movies hustled their hulking photographic machines
around the Fairfield Hills campus this week setting up motion picture shots
and then recording them on film for the feature Sleepers, which now is in
production there.
The normally placid campus carried much more traffic than normal in connection
with the moviemaking. Traffic flow was regulated to keep passing vehicles away
from the several movie sets in use.
Director Barry Levinson is using Fairfield Hills as the setting for The
Wilkinson Home For Boys, an institution for wayward male adolescents.
Fairfield Hills, a once-bustling state psychiatric institution which had
housed thousands of mentally ill people, has seen its patient population
dwindle in recent years to the point where it is scheduled to close at the end
of this year.
Production was underway in Bridgeport Hall, the large, centrally located
building which serves as Fairfield Hills' main dining hall. Besides the
brilliant lights positioned within the building which are used to illuminate
the movie set, technicians aimed banks of floodlights into the hall's windows
from outside to give the illusion on film that it was nice day, when it
actually was cold, wet and blustery outdoors.
Movie extras dressed in dark brown military-style uniforms who are playing
institution guards stood outside Bridgeport Hall waiting for their scenes to
be set up for filming.
Filming has been underway at various places on the sprawling campus including
Woodbury Hall, Stratford Hall, Shelton House and Fairfield House.
Workmen erected bleachers and various structures on an athletic field near
Kent House where the filmmakers will photograph a football game between actors
playing the inmate boys and the guards. About 500 extras will be used in that
scene.
As the film crew hustled gear between buildings on the hospital grounds, the
aroma of fresh-cooked foods from catering trucks wafted across the campus.
Groups of seagulls waited for diners to leave their food so they could pounce
on it. The gulls especially like french fries.
Sleepers is a gritty drama set in the mid-1960s that tells a tale of
friendship, betrayal and revenge. It is based on the best seller of the same
name.
Besides Newtown, photography for the movie is being done in New York City. The
Warner Brothers film starring Robert DeNiro, Brad Pitt and Kevin Bacon is
scheduled for release in the fall of 1996.
