Glorydays July 21, 1995

This week in 1990

Chris Hayward went 6-for-8 hitting his 15th and 16th home runs of the season

as the Newtown Little League Majors Division all-stars split their first two

games in district tournament action. Hayward was the losing pitcher, despite

striking out 12 men against Shelton, while Chris Petitti fired a three-hitter

in the team's win over Oxford. Rich Rekos also banged a pair of homers for

Newtown in the two-game set.

This week in 1985

Behind the offensive efforts of Scott Voss, Geoff Hansen, Gabe Dorman, Brian

Leavitt, and Paul Pedone, the Newtown Senior Division All-Stars, coached by

Tom Wyatt, rallied from a seventh-inning deficit of 5-3 to defeat Wilton 7-5

for the District 3 Championship. In the semifinal game, Newtown advanced to

the final behind the right arm of Steve Bigham who fired a two-hit shutout in

a 2-0 Newtown win, also against Wilton. Pedone and John Saputo each had two

hits in collecting both RBI. Other all-stars included Chris Daly, Dan Otton,

Keith Bliss, Shane Eaton, and Jack Lynch.

This week in 1980

The Newtown Nuggets became state champions when they defeated Wilton 10-4 in

the finals of the ASA Fastpitch Tournament. Kim DeCarlo was the winning

pitcher for the Nuggets and helped her own cause going 7-for-11 at the plate

along with teammate Jackie Smith. Trish O'Byrne was 5-for-9 for the Nuggets

who also got important efforts from Ann O'Doy, Ann Heyde, Bonnie Hertberg,

Becky Sherwood, Lori Zemo, and Heather Monsanto.

This week in 1975

Mark Leitner, Glen Rooney, and David Hiteshew each collected three hits, but

the Newtown Little League all-stars lost a 16-7 contest against Shelton South.

Leitner and Bobby Hickson split up the pitching duties in the loss. Other team

members included Ed Shortt, Ken Hunihan, Todd Brown, Phil Basso, Carl Fazio,

Charlie Newman, Ted Barrows, Bob Emslie, Billy Trudeau, and Jon Sumple.

This week in 1970

Newtown Pop Warner Football began its first week of practice at Taylor Field

with Charlie Chamberlain and Al Cramer in charge of the Lions, and Tom

Bickelhaupt, Bob Finn, and Ray Michaud at the helm for the Cubs. Al Cragin was

the official executive head coach of both clubs.

This week in 1965

Coaches Ennis McQuail and Dick Newman slected their 1965 Newtown Little

League All-Star team which lost 10-3 to Norwich in the opening round and then

8-3 to Union City, despite a long home run by Jim Cavanaugh. Other Newtown

stars that season included Dick Newman, Bill Church, Mat McQuail, Al Morgan,

joe Gallo, Gary Grubisa, Mike Cavanaugh, Charles Jacoby, Bob Berkins, Bruce

Taylor, John O'Malyev, Kevin Joyce, Fred Randall, Don Zinn, and Bill Spear.

This week in 1960

On the wings of a pair of electrifying home runs off the bat of John Peck, the

Newtown Cleaners Giants defeated the Trade-Well Yankees 10-6 in the Newtown

Little League championship game. Bill Kayfus pitched six innings to earn the

win for the Giants while John Kocet was the hard-luck loser.

This week in 1955

Four team managers from teams making up the Country Little League, selected a

roster of 19 all-stars from neighboring towns to compete against other

all-star teams around the state. Making the team from Newtown were Kenny

Smith, Ronnie Botsford, Karl Pfalzgraf, and Richie Farrell.

This week in 1950

Plastic Molding earned its first win of the season beating the Newtown

Cleaners 6-2 in Newtown Men's Softball action. Andy Hunihan and George McManus

each had a pair of hits in the game for the winners. Joe Danuszar and George

Fesh, meanwhile, also had hot days at the plate as the Hawks beat the Waysides

14-6.

This week in 1945

While there wasn't much happening in the way of Newtown sports this week,

there were several listings in the real estate department. A six-room Newtown

home on three acres was selling for $8,600. A three-room ocean-front cottage

on Martha's Vineyard, with its own private beach, was selling (not renting)

for $1,200. In the " employment needed " section, a local farmer was seeking "

one married man and one sober single man " for barn work.
