Glorydays - December 22, 1995

This week in 1990

NHS senior Mike Waterbury posted one of the finest single-game scoring

performances in Newtown High basketball history (the highest since 1953) as he

pumped in 37 points in a 64-54 win over Bunnell of Stratford. John Ball scored

a career-high 16 points in the win as well, while Rob Bassett added ten. The

game was the second of the season for the Indians who beat Immaculate,

Bunnell, and Abbott Tech to open the season at 3-0.

This week in 1985

Jennifer Duhamel, 14, of Newtown, was the champion of the New York area

regional Pepsi Hot Shot Competition allowing her to advance to the Nationals

in Denver, Colorado. Duhamel had qualified for the regionals by winning the

local competition held at the Newtown Middle School. Other's who qualified for

the regional contest were Terry McGuinness (14) and David Brookes (11).

This week in 1980

It took five games, but the Newtown High School girls' basketball team finally

won one for its new coach Joe Fazio when it defeated Abbott Tech, 58-26.

Jeannine Cea was the leading scorer for Newtown with ten points while Sue

Roman, Jackie Smith, Dana Skalandunas, Melanie Smith, Grace Whitney, Dori

Cofer, Meg Kennedy, Laura Gollinghorst, and Sue McMahon also scored points in

the win.

This week in 1975

In their first game of the year, the Newtown Squirts hockey team was shutout

13-0 by a tough New Milford squad. The Squirts were coached by Bob Stockbridge

and were made up of Chuck Hill, Kevin Owen, Dale Jackson, Pat Kutka, Chris

Leahy, Chris Peterman, Joe Seibert, Chris Roberts, Pat Dionne, Mile Silva,

Brian Maciolek, Bill Gilroy, Tim Goodale, Bobby Tynan, Evan Smith, Pat Kearns,

Mark Adams, Doug Cerri, Fred Merrill, and Scott Conover.

This week in 1970

The St Rose Sports Guild Basketball League, under the fine officiating of the

Shpunt brothers, enjoyed a full slate of action as the Rockets beat the Hawks

22-18 and the Celtics were 32-23 winners over the Lakers. The Rockets were

winners despite losing their star center, Rick Hanrahan, to an ankle injury.

Bob Cavanaugh picked up the slack and scored 12 points for the win. Toby

Spector led the Hawks team. The Celtics were led to victory by the rebounding

of Jim Jossics and Hank Carruth. Ken Richardson, Randy Forsythe, and Mike

Walsh all played well in defeat for the Lakers.

This week in 1965

Jacquie Leitch and her sister Linda took gold medals as the Newtown swimmers

competed at an AAU swim meet at Hillhouse High School in New Haven. Jacquie

won the 50 free and Linda the 100 back. Coach Helen Aiken was happy with the

efforts of all of her swimmers including Spike McQuail, Clayton Shaw, Marion

Wadleigh, Bob Berkins, Wally Pitman, and Scott Leitch.

This week in 1960

Dick Farrell scored a team-high 14 points, but the Newtown High basketball

team was no match for Masuk who won the game 53-45 behind Billy Hurd's 20

points and another 15 from Karl Svensson.

This week in 1955

Kathy Milot scored 20 points to lead the NHS girls' basketball team to a 46-32

win over Bethel. Emmy Johnson, Sarah Jackson, and Theresa Feli were also cited

for their strong play in the backcourt. In the jayvee game Judy Lockwood

scored 15 points to lead NHS to a 30-15 win as well.
