P&Z Approves A Gazebo For Nunnawauk Meadows
Residents at Nunnawauk Meadows, a 120-unit housing complex for the elderly on
Nunnawauk Road, soon will be able to enjoy each other's company in a gazebo to
be built there.
Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) members August 15 approved an amendment
to Newtown Housing for the Elderly, Inc's. (NHE), special exception to the
zoning regulations for the housing complex, allowing construction of the
gazebo.
Attorney William Denlinger, representing NHE, told P&Z members the zoning
regulations don't have the flexibility to allow for miscellaneous land uses at
the elderly housing complex, so NHE had to seek special permission to erect
the gazebo.
Building a gazebo with the dimensions of 12 feet by 24 feet won't pose safety
hazards or create traffic problems, Mr Denlinger said.
Robert Shaw, chairman of NHE's building committee, said having a gazebo at
Nunnawauk Meadows will enhance the residents' quality of life. The summerhouse
will allow residents to socialize, talk, and play cards outdoors, he said.
The Newtown Lions Club donated money to the non-profit NHE for the gazebo, he
said.
P&Z member Heidi Winslow said installing a gazebo at Nunnawauk Meadows is an
appropriate use of the property. The other P&Z members agreed.
