Rolling Garbage Truck Pins Driver
Police report the rescue of a garbage truck driver whose truck had flipped
over, pinning his leg beneath it.
Police said they learned just before 10 am on February 15 that truck driver
Brendon Conway, 31, of Woodbury, who was collecting garbage on a commercial
route, had attempted to climb the steep, snow-covered driveway of the
Fairfield County Fish and Game Club off Hammertown Road when the full-sized
truck skidded into an embankment, ejected Conway through a window, and rolled
over onto its side, trapping Conway's leg beneath it.
The truck is used by Diversified Waste Disposal, Inc, of Danbury.
After the truck was lifted off Conway's leg with the use of inflatable
airbags, Conway was found to have cuts and a leg injury, police said.
Ambulance personnel transported him to Danbury Hospital for treatment.
When the truck rolled over, about 40 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from it,
according to Newtown Fire Marshal George Lockwood. Botsford firefighters
contained the hazardous material spill and the state Department of
Environmental Protection was called to supervise, he said.
Besides the Newtown Police, those participating in the rescue were the Monroe
Police, the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, The United Fire Company of
Botsford, The Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, the Stepney
Volunteer Fire Department, the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department and the
Stevenson Volunteer Fire Department. Mr Lockwood said 22 fire vehicles
responded to the call.
The property where the incident occurred is on the Newtown-Monroe town line.
"He was lucky," Mr Lockwood said of Mr Conway who suffered relatively minor
injuries considering the scope of the accident.
