Glorydays - July 26, 1996
This week in 1991
Savoy Linen (11-3), in the " A " Division, and Hurd Construction (13-1), in
the " B " , became the year's first two teams to clinch playoff berths in the
Newtown Slo-Pitch Softball League, with a month still to play. Jeff Saputo
went 4-for-5 with a home run and John Miles and Jeff Robertson both went
3-for-5 as Savoy beat C&S Septic, 17-6 to clinch. Chris Thompson went 4-for-4
and Billy Hurd and Jim Craven each added three hits at Hurd defeated Pitney
Bowes 10-9 to clinch its spot.
This week in 1986
Stan Seibert, Brian Kachur, and Mike Kirk stroked out three hits apiece as
Pizza Palace whipped Newtown Chiropractic 9-2 to improve its first-place
record to 10-1 in the " A " Division. In other " A " action, Louie Galante
belted a pair of home runs and Dave Frobey added another as Heritage Pension
beat Tendler Realtors 18-5 to keep pace with a 9-1 record. In the " B "
Division, Aim Glass (9-2) took over first place as Brian Connelly went 4-for-4
and Joe Hennegan went 3-for-3 in a 14-1 win over Hertberg Associates Hurd
improved its mark to 8-2 with a 12-inning win over Fireside. Karl Svensson
homered in the 12th inning to provide the margin of victory while Bill Hurd
and Jeff Saputo collected four hits each for the winners.
This week in 1981
" A " Division leader, Hawley Manor (12-2) edged the " B " Division leading
Newtown Police 15-12 in an interleague matchup as Rick Matern had four hits
and Jack Matern added three. Brian Dudeck and Jack Qubick led the Police at
the dish. Meanwhile, " C " Division front runner, Oldies But Goodies (9-3),
were nipped by the " B " Division's Sandy Hook Plumbers, 7-5. Gary Andrews, Ed
Andrews, and Jim Jossick each had three hits for the Plumbers while Chris and
Bryan Kachur combined for five OBG base hits.
This week in 1976
Matty's Restaurant rebounded from its first loss of the season to beat Bolmer
Sanitation, 10-3. Rick Matern went 4-for-4 with a home run and Jack Matern
went 3-for-3 to pace the winners. Canter Package pounded out 30 hits in other
" A " Division action, to beat Fairfield Hills 23-4. George Matern and Ziggy
Matthews each slammed five hits to pace the winners in that one. McCulloch
Realtors got three hits each from Jim Shpunt and Will Anderson as they beat
the Avalon Whaler, 11-6. In " B " Division action, the Pedagogues got three
hits from Randy Post and a home run from Bill Manfredonia as they beat My
Father's Place, 12-11. The Newtown Police, meanwhile, ran their unbeaten
streak to ten-straight with a 25-11 win over Village Coffee Shop. Jack Qubick,
Rich Stook, and Bob Tvardzik combined for eleven Police hits.
This week in 1971
In the Newtown Slo-Pitch Softball League's inception year, Park and Rec 2
upped its undefeated record to 11-0 as it got extra base hits from Jackie
Shpunt, Dave Mountain, and Jim Glover and defeated second-place DeCarlo (9-2)
to take a firm grip on the National Division race. In the American Division,
first-place White Birch beat Bolmer Sanitation 15-5 while the Sandy Hook Fire
Department beat Jaycees White, 17-5 to remain in second place.
