The Rev George D. Birge Named Prelate Of Honor
The Rev George D. Birge, pastor of St Rose of Lima Parish since 1986, has been
named a prelate of honor, which carries the title of monsignor, by Pope John
Paul II.
Bishop Edward M. Egan of the Diocese of Bridgeport announced last week that
papal honors, all carrying the title of monsignor, have been bestowed by Pope
John Paul II on 17 priests in the diosese including Father Birge.
Monsignor Birge was appointed a full-time auditor of the Diocesan Matrimonial
Tribunal in 1978 and Defender of the Bond and a Pro-Snyoda Judge of the
diocese in 1980.
A native of Stratford, he attended schools there then attended New Haven State
Teachers' College, Fairfield University, St Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield and
St Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained in 1956 in St Augustine's
Cathedral in Bridgeport.
Over the years he served as parocial vicar of St Thomas Parish, Fairfield; St
Augustine Cathedral Parish, Bridgeport, Blessed Sacrament Parish, Bridgeport,
and St Clement Parish, Stamford.
He held several teaching posts including faculty member of Notre Dame Boys'
High School in Bridgeport and Central Catholic High School in Norwalk, dean of
discipline at Stamford Catholic High School, and spiritual director and
faculty member of Christ the King Seminary in Stamford.
From 1971 to 1977 he was pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Georgetown and St
Patrick Parish in Redding. He served as a weekend assistant at St Elizabeth
Seton Parish in Ridgefield from 1980 to 1986 and also served as chaplain of
Villa Maria Retreat House in Stamford.
