TAMPA, FLA. -- Norton Auctioneers of Coldwater, Mich., held its annual Florida
Consignment Auction on February 7. It was highlighted by Corporal Joe, a circa
1865 cigar store trade fixture consigned by a family who had owned it since
1929.
Cultivating heated bidding, the figure sold for $46,750, a record according to
the firm.
A pair of circa 1899 size 22 shoes from a circus fat lady sold for $2,200. A
Lloof carousel sea monster figure fetched $20,350, and more than 50 other
carousel horses sold from $500 to $15,900.
A wood circus wagon, formerly a prop at the now defunct Circus World in
Kissimmee, Fla., sold for $13,750; older bumper cars fetched $300 to $700;
canvas show banners sold from $200 to $975; and slot machines brought $1,100
to $1,450.
Arcade and coin-op machines included a 1933 Evans Sweepstakes game, which sold
for $1,100; a claw digger, which brought $2,045; a Caille Fortune Reel, which
sold for $1,875; and a four-foot Mason gaming wheel, which reached $1,875.
