An Invitation to Music

(with cut)

BY MICHELE HOGAN

The Newtown Middle School Jazz Project and Concert Choir performed a wide

variety of music for fifth grade students throughout the district and at

Ashlar Residence last week.

The concert choir, under the direction of John Pope, enchanted the audience

with the early hymn, Simple Gifts , and other pieces.

Walter Mamlok, jazz band director, asked the assembled teachers and parents at

Hawley School, "Who has heard of the group Blood Sweat and Tears?" Teachers

smiled and raised their hands, only to find that they were the only ones! But

as the band broke into a jazzed-up version of Spinning Wheel , the younger

generation realized what they had been missing.

The Jazz Project includes players from sixth to eighth grade, and Mr Mamlok

was quick to tell the students that the electric guitar player is in eighth

grade so "you know what that means, we need you!"
