Council PRofiles, DAVID NANAVATY

David Nanavaty first moved to Newtown as a youth in 1970 with his parents, and

24 years later as assistant public defender for Connecticut Department of

Public Defenders he returned with his own family "because of the schools." The

Democratic candidate for the council in District 2, favors renovations at

Hawley School and Newtown High School.

"I've been the Board of Education liaison for the Hawley PTA and have followed

very closely what the Board of Ed is doing," said Mr Nanavaty. "The board has

been doing a great job keeping an eye on cost control and keeping an eye on

the future needs so that we won't turn around in a few years and have to

expand the high school again."

Mr Nanavaty is involved in the community as coach for Parks and Recreation

kindergarten basketball, the T-ball summer program for kindergarten and first

grade, and assistant coach for Newtown soccer at Hawley School.

The candidate said he is "interested" to see what will happen to the Fairfield

Hills Hospital campus - "whether or not some of these buildings can be

utilized by the town." He added that this might be a wise idea because the

first selectman and local representative are both on the Fairfield Hills

Oversite Committee and should have some influence. "There would be a big

impact on the town if the state decides to sell the property to a developer."

Mr Nanavaty said he is "keeping an open mind" as far as economic development

is concerned. "There are a lot of pros and cons to economic development in the

Hawleyville area. The town will have to be cautiuos about allowing

commercial/industrial development in areas that are now residential or

farmland.

"We have to expand our tax base," said the candidate, "but we don't want to

wind up with conditions like the Post Road in southern Fairfield County."
