SNAPSHOT SEAN CURRIER
Occupation: I'm a student and I work at Sharon's Coffee and Tea. I'll be
attending Miami Dade in the fall to study environmental science.
Why environmental science: Trying to create hope for a very desperate
situation - trying to fight corporations through very strict regulations. I
feel basically only a few problems need to be solved that would improve the
world as a whole. I believe that the root of our environmental problems comes
with the mass meat industry - animal farming. I believe that's the major cause
of our problems, besides nuclear power plants.
Are you vegan or vegetarian: Yes, vegetarian.
How long in Newtown: 7« years. I lived in Florida for five years [before
that], and I grew up in Mystic.
Biggest change in Newtown: Uh! All the development. It's absolutely
disgusting.
Family: I have a mom and dad, and three brothers - they live in Sandy Hook.
Do you like to read: I love to read. There's never enough time to read. I like
to read a lot of metaphysical books and bizarre stories types - Kurt Vonnegut
and Mark Vonnegut, his son. Mark Vonnegut wrote The Eden Express ... his
autobiography. I like very factual books, too.
Favorite book: Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin.
Organizations: Grass Roots Network out of New Haven, I do some work with them.
It's a small group that works on very local issues - stopping incinerators is
one of the big ones.
Favorite food: I'd have to say yogurt.
Hobbies: For five years [I've been] playing guitar and singing. Music is my
favorite thing in the whole world, I think. Basically, it's folk that I play
and sing. I've played at coffee houses a couple of times - not professionally,
just sort of on a whim. I really like different aspects of art and try to do a
little of evertyhing in that area - drawing and painting. I like to make
jewelry. And I write a lot, a lot of poetry. And I always love walking in the
woods. That's about it.
Other interests: One of my major passions is independent midwifery and [I work
to] support that, to make it legal in this country. [I believe in] women's
choices and health and safety. Midwifery is women helping women - doing
something completely natural.
Favorite place outdoors in Newtown: I'd have to say my favorite place was
where Blackbridge Road was developed; where you'd walk over the railroad
bridge and walk along the water.
Personal philosophy: Lots of love and patience, because I find I lose patience
very easily and I just have to try harder and harder. Everything I do I always
think about how it effects everyone and everything around me. That's just the
way my brain works... I definitely believe in Karma - I don't believe in an
eye for an eye.
