COLGIN CABERNET SAUVIGNON "SUPERLOT" SELLS FOR A RECORD $112,500

NEW YORK CITY -- A "superlot" of oversize bottles of Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon

sold for $112,500 at Zachys/Christie's on December 4. The price establishes a

new record price for any lot of California wine at auction and is the most

expensive lot sold at a wine auction this year.

The "superlot" comprised of four 18 liter bottles, one from each vintage of

the wine from 1992 through 1995, the equivalent of 96 bottles of wine.

Bidders participated on the telephone and in the room. The hammer went down to

the successful buyer, Barrie Larvin, on behalf of the Rio Suites Hotel and

Casino, Las Vegas, who said, "I am a big fan of this wine! It is the sheer

quality which is so remarkable and in my opinion Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon is

also the best food wine produced in California."

On the future of the oversize bottles, Larvin commented. "Let's just say that

I'll be pouring Colgin at one minute to and one minute past midnight next year

on December 31, 1999."

The Rio Suites Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, also bought three of the four

further lots of Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon included in the sale. A case of

vintage 1992 sold for $6,325; vintage 1994 sold for $5,750; and vintage 1995,

the first case ever to be offered at auction, sold for $8,050. A case of 1994

vintage, which was sold to another bidder, fetched $13,800.

Only two oversize bottles in each vintage were produced. The remaining 18

liter bottles lie in the cellars' library collection. Colgin Cabernet

Sauvignon was first produced in 1992 from the "Herb Lamb Vineyard" in Napa

Valley and has shot to cult status in the last four years. The lots were

offered on behalf of one of the founding partners of the winery, Mr Frederick

H. Schrader.

Other areas of growth from different regions, in addition to the top end

Californian wines, have included top Burgundy wines and rare Tuscan wines,

known as the Super-Tuscans. A special section in the first sale of 1999, to be

held in New York on February 5, will be devoted to Italian wines.

Christie's/Zachys plan to conduct nine sales in 1999 in both New York and Los

Angeles.
