Rolling Hyundai Hit Wall

Newtown Police report Timothy Sullins-Joyner, 31, of Naugatuck was operating a 2020 Hyundai Elantra, which was parked in a driveway on Church Hill Road at 2:59 pm July 18. Police say Sullins-Joyner left the vehicle but did not put it in park, resulting in the vehicle rolling back across Church Hill Road and into a driveway across the street, striking a rock wall and a parked vehicle, a 2016 Chevrolet Trax owned by Lillian Novak of East Hampton.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken as the incident occurred on private property.

Wedged Vehicle

Newtown Police report Sandra Betner, 73, of Roxbury, operating a 2016 Audi A6 Quattro, was traveling southbound on Glen Road at 2:31 pm July 31. Police say Betner attempted to turn right to enter a driveway when the front end of her vehicle went off the roadway, causing the rear end of the vehicle to become suspended in the air, blocking the southbound travel lane.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed from the driveway and repositioned on the roadway.

No enforcement action was taken.

Three Cars And Boat Collision

Newtown Police report Jaime Cruz-Felipe, 26, of Stratford, operating a 1998 Freightliner Conventional tractor trailer, was stopped southbound on Main Street at 5 pm August 1. He was behind a 2021 Toyota Camry being operated by Pranav Kodakara, 19, of Trumbull, which was in turn behind a 2019 Toyota Tacoma towing a boat, operated by Kyle Langan, 37, of Hamden. Police say Cruz-Felipe moved forward and struck the rear bumper of Kodakara’s vehicle, which was pushed forward into the propeller and motor of Langan’s boat. The boat was pushed forward on the trailer, snapping the front support, and Langan’s truck was pushed forward as well.

No injuries were reported. Langan’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

Cruz-Felipe was issued an infraction for following too close.

Hit Parked GMC

Newtown Police report Judith Qualey, 77, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Toyota Camry, was turning into a parking spot in front of CVS at 6 Queen Street at 11:40 am August 2. While pulling into the spot, police say Qualey hit a parked, unoccupied 2016 GMC Canyon owned by Gregory Venice of Ansonia.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken as the incident occurred on private property.

Backed Into Backing Car

Newtown Police report Gerard Shpunt, 70, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Mazda CX-5, was backing from a parking spot in a parking lot on Queen Street at 5:22 pm August 2. Emily Carlucci, 23, of Shelton, operating a 2011 Honda Accord, was also backing from a spot in the same lot. Police say Carlucci stopped when she saw the other vehicle backing out but Shpunt did not, colliding with Carlucci’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken as the incident occurred on private property.

Intersection Crash

Newtown Police report Deirdre Smith, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2004 Subaru Forester, was traveling on Main Street and stopped at the intersection with West Street at 8:49 pm August 3. Lilah Heyman, 23, of Trumbull, operating a 2018 Toyota Rav4, was traveling on West Street, stopped, and moved into the intersection to continue on West Street. Police say Smith turned toward West Street and the two vehicles collided.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was mentioned in the report.

DUI Charge

Newtown Police report that on August 4, officers responded to the area of South Main Street and Mile Hill Road on the report of an erratic driver. Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Upon further investigation, Mauricio Ruiz, 47, of Bristol, was arrested and charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and failure to drive in the proper lane.

Ruiz was released on a $500 surety bond with a court date of August 16 in Danbury Superior Court.

Toyota Hit Poles

Newtown Police report Gabrielle Milczarski, 18, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2014 Toyota Rav4, was traveling northbound on Pole Bridge Road at 12:19 pm August 5. Police say Milczarski traveled off the roadway to the right and the front end of her vehicle struck two utility poles.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Milczarski was issued an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Passengers Injured

Newtown Police report that Khawaja Mamun, 48, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2018 Subaru Outback, was stopped at a driveway on Equestrian Ridge Road at 11:04 am August 6. Police say Mamun picked up a passenger and then drove northbound on Equestrian Ridge Road, where he drove off the right-hand side of the road, striking a tree.

Four passengers reported minor injuries but only one was transported to Danbury Hospital. The vehicle was towed.

Mamun was issued an infraction for making a restricted turn and failure to secure someone under 16 years old in a seat belt.

Larceny Charge

At 4:30 pm August 7, Hector Orlando Kavirajan-Jimenez, 58, of Gaylordsville, turned himself in at Newtown Police headquarters regarding an active arrest warrant in his name stemming from a criminal investigation that began in May 2022.

Kavirajan-Jimenez was charged with third-degree larceny.

He was released on a $10,000 bond with a court date of August 21 in Danbury Superior Court.

Flipped SUV

Newtown Police report Stanley Paul, 43, of Danbury, operating a 2007 Toyota Rav4, was traveling northbound on Berkshire Road at 7:45 pm August 7. Police say Paul traveled off the right-hand side of the roadway and up an embankment, causing the vehicle to flip end over end, landing on all four tires. The vehicle continued back onto the roadway before coming to a stop.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Paul was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Evading Vehicle Sought

Newtown Police are investigating an evading motor vehicle that left the scene of a collision at the Rizzo Construction site located on Berkshire Road at Toddy Hill Road at 8 am August 8. A red Audi A4, between the years of 2009 to 2012, drove over the raised median on Berkshire Road, causing damage to the rebar and granite curbing. The vehicle then left the scene.
