Spider-Man crept through dozens of young imaginations as the sky grew dark on Tuesday evening. With lights out at Reed Intermediate School, where the cafetorium filled with scents of fresh popcorn, parents and children enjoyed a Movie Night as they watched Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse on August 13.

Ahead of a day’s worth of light rain, and possible summer storms in the evening forecast, organizers on Monday had announced the event would move to its rain location, Reed Intermediate School, rather than spreading picnic blankets out at Fairfield Hills. Hosted by Newtown Parks and Recreation Department and Newtown Prevention Council, the night’s events included a 6 pm performance by dancers with Ashurst Academy of Irish Dance.

More than a dozen dancers moved through routines and tap numbers in groups large, small, and solo, showing off talents that have won the crew qualifying titles in the past.

Following their acts on stage was DJ Austin Dailey, who joined the group of curious young faces and led them through interactive dances.

The cafetorium was overrun with the sounds of scampering feet and laughter. Disco lights splashed across children’s smiles as DJ Dailey asked, “Can you hop? Can you hop on one foot?”

He then switched songs and sang with them about “Driving and Dancing,” and prompted more dance moves. “Can you cross your legs? Can you wave your arms?”

The party continued until movie time, after 8 pm. Trickling in were additional guests carrying lawn chairs and holding hands with more children anticipating an evening with their favorite superhero.

Many more arrived to make the night a success. The 50 or more people in attendance enjoyed the movie, said Kate Geerer, who helped coordinate the event. Newtown Prevention Council member Chelsea Prenata worked the concession stand with Ms Geerer, Assistant Director of Recreation RoseAnn Reggiano, and Recreation Commission Chairman Ed Marks.
