To The Editor:

I began to compose this letter on day eight of sitting in the dark aftermath of Tropical Storm Isaias. While we were lucky to avoid any real damage from the storm and made sure to count our daily blessings, we felt the frustrations many people were feeling. What was going on with Eversource and why were the infrastructures so poorly set up that even after doubling my electric bill I was still out of power for so long? How can this get changed?

I was pleased to see that Rebekkah Harriman-Stites echoed my concerns as well. She called for accountability of Eversource and wants our government to get to the bottom of what went wrong. As someone who is running for our State Representative, I want someone who stands up for the underdog and is concerned more about the people whom she represents and less about lining the pockets of executives.

If you look at Harriman-Stites’ record you will not be surprised at the passion which she fights for those who need help. Here are just a few of the ways Rebekkah has brought change:

 *Worked as a community organizer in Rhode Island to help expand healthcare to women.

 *Helped restore the right to vote to those convicted of felonies in CT.

 *Worked with clients to help develop affordable and supportive housing.

 *Supports and advocates for immigrant rights.

 *Provided critical mental health services, offered free mammograms and ultrasounds, free or low-cost healthcare, and alternative educational programming to inner city students.

 *Serves on the BOE and works tirelessly to ensure that our LGBTQ+ and BIPOC students are protected and supported in our schools and community.

When November arrives, remember August. Vote for those who look out for the people. Vote for Rebekkah Harriman-Stites.

PURA, the regulatory board that oversees Eversource and is supposed to be an advocate for the consumer is made up of political appointees, each getting $150,000 per year, and selected by the Governor. The other body who was a party to the rate hikes, but did not take action, was the Office of Attorney General Tong. As for the laws around this, Democrats have had control of the legislature for decades and not seen cause to make changes.

Mitch meanwhile has been on the front lines working across the aisle to make changes and has committed to major reforms.
