The Newtown High School Marching Band & Color Guard fall season has begun.

The group of 78 seventh to twelfth grade students participated in a two-week band camp that began August 12 and was scheduled to run through August 23, focusing on music, athleticism, show visuals, and marching techniques.

The 2019 show, titled “Life Sentence,” depicts the harsh realities of life in prison from the perspective of someone convicted of a crime they did not commit. The show explores the emotions, dreams, and realities of someone living behind bars.

Upcoming band and guard events include a “Friday Night Under the Lights” event scheduled for Friday, August 23, at the Newtown High School’s Blue & Gold stadium, starting at approximately 7:30 pm, which will offer members of the public a first look at this season’s marching band show.

Other upcoming events this season include the marching band and guard participating in Newtown’s Labor Day Parade, September 2, and weekly band and guard competitions, beginning September 7. The annual Joseph P. Grasso Marching Band Festival home show is scheduled for Saturday, October 5, and the Mega Family Tag Sale will be held on Saturday, October 19. This year’s national championship competition is slated for November 9 at MetLife Stadium.
