Two local bridges were temporarily closed last week and earlier this week while routine maintenance was done on each.

Town of Newtown Assistant Engineer Raymond Smith said the closures were “run-of-the-mill projects.”

The bridge on Button Shop Road, between that road’s intersections with Little Brook and Main Street South, and the bridge on Turkey Hill Road, between that road’s intersections with Pecks Lane and Mile Hill Road South, were affected.

“It was really just milling and overlay,” Smith said August 21. “The milling machine took out old asphalt and then laid new asphalt.”

Santoro, Inc, of Newington weatherproofed the bridge decks and sealed the expansion joints on both bridges, and S&S Asphalt Paving of Southbury did the new paving.

LRM Inc also did work on the concrete haunches on the Turkey Hill Road bridge joints, according to Smith.

The bridges were closed to through traffic early Wednesday, August 19. The Button Shop bridge opened for a few hours on August 20, after the new asphalt cooled to a temperature safe for use.

It temporarily closed again on August 21, Smith said, for work on its joints. The bridge was to be finished at the end of the work day.

The Turkey Hill Road bridge followed a similar timeline, with all work to be completed by Tuesday, August 25.

Smith said both bridges are “absolutely” safe and there are no concerns for public safety.

While one group of S&S Asphalt Paving employees are bathed in the steam of fresh asphalt, John Jasiulevicius operates the roller over the deck of the Turkey Hill Road bridge on August 20. The bridge was one of two spans in town that had routine maintenance done this month. —Bee Photo, Hicks
