Newtown Underwater Search and Rescue (NUSAR), a professionally trained all volunteer dive rescue team servicing Newtown and the surrounding communities in western Connecticut, will conduct its inaugural dive-a-thon Saturday, September 17.

From noon until 8 pm that day, divers will be in the water continuously. They will be equipped with an underwater communication line and camera, and the team will livestream the event.

Donations are requested; a minimum of $25 is suggested by organizers. Those who go through the website (NUSAR.org) can leave a comment if they’d like a shout-out from one of the divers during the fundraiser.

Since 1989 NUSAR has responded to water-based emergencies on, in and along the rivers, lakes and ponds, 24/7. The team receives a small operating budget from the town, but most of its training costs and the purchase and maintenance of equipment is done through donations.

NUSAR members Richard Wilford (kneeling) and Matt Rownin (center, standing) and Lieutenant Hans Williams present some of the dive team’s gear during a recent mock call and station tour.
