Pack 170 Starting A New Year

As the school year begins and the long, lazy days of summer come to a close, Cub Scout Pack 170 will start a fresh scouting year. The pack is looking forward to another exciting year with a schedule full of special events such as a Halloween extravaganza, a full pinewood derby, the yearly “Blue and Gold” dinner to celebrate scouting’s anniversary, and a year-end pack camp-out, which drew over 225 participants last year.

Summertime events are also scheduled including a trip to a minor league baseball game in June, a visit to “Splashdown” Water Park in July, and the annual rocket launch in August.

To get involved, simply come to the signup night, speak to one of the enthusiastic leaders, and get started! Signup for new scouts will be held at the Newtown United Methodist Church on Church Hill Road Friday, September 8, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the “Fellowship Hall” around the back of the church. Annual dues are $35 for the first scout in the family, and $30 for each additional scout. A year subscription to Boys Life magazine is also available for $9.

Cub Scouting is open to all boys in first through fifth grade, with Pack 170 serving the Sandy Hook Elementary and Saint Rose Schools. Some important dates to look forward to include the first pack meeting scheduled for September 25 at 6:45 pm at Sandy Hook Elementary School which will include a visit from the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department. Also, a new leader orientation program is planned for September 14 at 7:30 pm in the old board room downstairs at the Cyrenius Booth Library, where Cubmaster Mike Salvatore will present a basic overview of the who, what, and where of Pack 170. Finally, the first monthly committee meeting of the school year will be held Monday, September 18, at the Newtown United Methodist Church. All parents as well as leaders are welcome to attend the committee meeting. A full annual schedule will be provided to all members once it becomes available.
