Musicians: Discover Your Creative Side During 10th Dulcimer Celebration

NEW MILFORD — Musicians and music lovers alike are invited to discover their creative side during the tenth annual Housatonic Dulcimer Celebration. The three-day event is being planned for the weekend of September 19-21, with events to be presented at three locations near the town green.

Workshops will be offered in playing mountain dulcimers, hammer dulcimers, folk harps, guitars, drumming, fiddle, tin whistle, and singing. The musical gathering will be celebrating a decade of growth, having evolved into one of the best festivals in the Northeast. It continues to attract musicians and participants from all over the United States who wish to try new and innovative styles on traditional instruments.

This year’s festival will be presented at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, New Milford Public Library and The First Congregational Church. Workshops and performances are scheduled for the entire weekend and all activities will take place indoors, so rain will not be a problem.

On Friday, September 19, Bernadette Wiemer, Rob Brereton, Doofus (Neal and Coleen Walters and Heidi and John Cerrigione), David Neiman, Carrie Crompton, Guy George, and Sue Ford be performing sets at Saint John’s Episcopal Church beginning at 7:30 pm. Tickets are 12. The church is on the green.

On Saturday, September 20, Thomasina and Friends (John Marshall and Dave Anderson) will perform at a lunchtime concert beginning at noon in the sanctuary of St John’s. Cost is $10.

Stephen Seifert, Ken Kolodner, and Lorraine and Bennett Hammond will be performing on Saturday at 7:30, also at St John’s. Cost is $12.

In addition to the aforementioned performers – most of whom will be leading workshops – teachers will also include Dallas Cline and David Marks. The workshop leaders and performers are traveling in from as far away as Boston, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia to teach participants new skills on their instruments. Workshops are open to all levels of playing abilities on both Saturday and Sunday.

Mountain dulcimers, hammered dulcimers and folk harps will be available for rent for the discovery classes.

For information about the workshops and/or concerts call 860-669-5618 or visit           www.robear.net.

The Housatonic Dulcimer Celebration is sponsored in cooperation with the Northwest Corner Arts Center, Inc., a not-for-profit organization.
