Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

Programs

*PAINTING WITH PURPOSE, a new craft class, Tuesday, September 9, at 1 pm, to learn how to paint flowers and leaves using basic brush strokes. Create decorated gift bags and greeting cards.

*HAIRCUTS will be offered every Monday by appointment between 12:30 and 2 pm. Cost is $12 for women and $10 for men. Call 270-4310.

*WHAT’S NEW at the center is a billiards room, poker/card room, ping pong, and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

Upcoming Programs

*HARVEST BAZAAR is coming! If you have a special craft or hobby and would like to donate it to sell at the bazaar, call 270-4310.

Day Trips

*Take a bus trip to THE BIG E FAIR on Wednesday, September 17, which is Connecticut Day. Depart at 8:30 am. Cost is $50.

*On September 30, en route to Lexington, Mass., the first stop will be at the Museum Of Our National Heritage, and lunch is included at The Colonial Inn in Concord, Mass. Enjoy a choice of potato crusted haddock or roasted pork loin with all the trimmings. After lunch enjoy a tour through historic and charming Lexington; departs 7:30 am; $74 per person.

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

Menu For Week Of

September 8–12

Monday: Beef stroganoff served over egg noodles, California blend vegetables, wheat bread, Bartlett pears.

Tuesday: Split pea and ham soup, spinach quiche, sliced beets, croissant, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Crab cake with remoulade sauce, mashed potato, mixed vegetables, pumpernickel bread, apricot halves.

Thursday: Oven fried chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, green peas, buttermilk biscuit, vanilla pudding topped with sliced strawberries

And for planning ahead—

Monday: September 15: Chicken parmesan, spaghetti with marinara sauce, Italian bread, dieted fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: September 16: Virginia ham with pineapple glaze, scalloped potatoes, cut green beans, buttermilk biscuit, pineapple juice, cinnamon apple slices
