Topic Of Next VNA Anniversary Program

Dr Ron Tietjen, chief of orthopedic surgery at Danbury Hospital, will be the featured speaker at the next 90th Anniversary Visiting Nurse Program to be held at the Newtown Senior Center.

Dr Tietjen will present “Total Joint Replacement — Past, Present and Future” Saturday, September 13. His program will run from 9:30 until 11 am at the Senior Center, 14 Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. He will be assisted by Dr Robert T. Deveney, co-director of the total join replacement at Danbury Hospital.

Ron Tietjen attended Shore Regional High School in West Long Branch, N.J. Active in sports and academics, scouting was an influential role during this time of his life and he achieved the Eagle Scout Award.

He received his bachelor of science degree from Ursinus College in 1968, graduating with honors in biology. From 1968 to 1972 he attended medical school at New York University, where he graduated with honors. His research included Honors Program in Biomechanics.

He served as an intern in surgery at NYU/Bellevue Medical Center, followed by a general surgery resident program from 1972 to 1974. During that time he also completed training programs at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Manhattan, and at the Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw, N.Y.

Dr Tietjen’s orthopedic training followed at New York Orthopedic Hospital at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York, where he became an Anne C. Kane Fellow in Orthopedics. He completed this training in 1977, after also participating in numerous clinical and scientific programs and published numerous papers.

Dr Tietjen joined Danbury Orthopedic Associates, PC in July 1977. He is also attending staff at Danbury Hospital and for several years also continued to teach at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital as a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery.

Dr Tietjen became certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1978. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Connecticut State Medical Society and the Fairfield County Medical Society.

Dr Tietjen is currently the chief of orthopedic surgery at Danbury Hospital, a role which he has held since 1997. He is also medical director for orthopedic surgery at the hospital.

His clinical practice is limited to disorders of the knee with emphasis on knee replacement surgery.

Dr Robert T. Deveney received his medical degree from State University of New York, Downstate Brooklyn, and did his internship and residency in general surgery at Roosevelt Hospital, New York City.

He was assistant resident, orthopedic surgery at New York Orthopaedic Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, and resident and Junior Annie C. Kane Fellow at The New York Orthopaedic Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He did an adult reconstructive surgery fellowship at Piedmont Hospital/Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

Dr Deveney is in private practice at Danbury Orthopedic Associates and is an attending physician at Danbury Hospital. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is licensed by the State of New York, State of Connecticut, and the State of Georgia.

There is no charge for the program and light refreshments will be served by the VNA board of directors.
