Yale Cancer Center’s Series Launches September 16

New Haven — Yale Cancer Center and the New Haven Free Public Library have collaborated to bring the latest information about cancer diagnosis and treatment to the public in a new fall series. “Talking About Cancer” will be offered by specialists from Yale Cancer Center at the downtown library, 133 Elm Street, once a month from September through December, on Tuesday evenings beginning at 5:30 pm.

The schedule is as follows:

Part 1, September 16: Genetic Testing: What Is It and Who Needs It? Danielle Campfield, MS, will sort out the information and misinformation regarding genetic testing. Ms Campfield is a cancer genetic counselor at Yale Cancer Center’s Cancer Genetic Counseling Program and is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

Part 2, October 21: Pain and Palliative Care with Thomas Quinn, APRN, discussing ways to prevent and relieve suffering and to improve quality of life for cancer patients. Mr Quinn is the advanced practice nurse for the Connecticut Challenge Survivorship Clinic at Yale Cancer Center, specializing in the treatment of pain resulting from cancer and its treatment. The Connecticut Challenge Survivorship Clinic is the first dedicated, multidisciplinary resource for cancer survivors in the state, providing patients and their families with vital information on cancer prevention, wellness, supportive services, and up-to-date health research related to cancer survivorship.

Part 3, November 18: Lung Cancer. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and Dr Daniel Boffa, assistant professor of surgical oncology, will discuss and answer questions about this disease. Dr Boffa has extensive experience with minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer and will review the latest in the detection, treatment, and prevention of the disease.

There is no charge for these programs, and free parking is available. Individuals may attend one or all of the discussions, and a light supper will be provided with advance registrations. Register for each program online at www.guidezilla.com/nhfpl or call 203–946-8835.
