The Resiliency Center of Newtown, within the SBC Building at 153 South Main Street, has a few events coming up this month.

The Back to School Coffee will be Wednesday, September 16, from 10 am until noon.

All are invited to stop in for a quick hello, or settle in and share how your summer was. All are welcome, and should feel free to bring a friend.

A weekly knitting/support group will begin Friday, September 18. Sessions will run from 3:30 to 4:45 pm.

All ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training (YMHFA) is being offered on Saturday, September 19, from 8 am to 5 pm.

Offered by The Avielle Foundation, these courses help communities feel more comfortable recognizing the signs and symptoms of youth approaching a brain health crisis and to think of ways to help and intervene.

The course is free. There will be a break for lunch.

Registration is requested and can be done by visiting aviellefoundation.org/newtown-brain-health-first-aid-course.

Girls On The Run, a national program that places emphasis on the whole girl approach by developing healthy minds and bodies, is returning for fall 2015.

The program is the Newtown and Sandy Hook girls in grades 3-5. The ten-week class includes lessons on confidence, self-esteem building, learning how to deal with bullies, and more, all combined with running. The course culminates with the girls running as a team in a 5K race.

The next series begins September 24, and will continue Mondays and Thursdays from 4:15 to 5:30 pm, until December 3. This group meets at NYA Sports & Fitness Center, 4 Primrose Street.

Registration for this popular program is open, and mandatory. Call RCN at 203-364-9750 or send email to jholguin@resiliencycenterofnewtown.org.

Entry to the center is through the lower rear parking lot of the SBC Building. For additional information about other programs and offerings of RCN, visit resiliencycenterofnewtown.org.

Founded in the aftermath of 12/14, The Resiliency Center of Newtown has a full day of special offerings, including crisis counseling, planned for the third anniversary of the Sandy Hook School shootings. Residents can take advantage of the programs free of charge.
