Stanley Earl Verry, 89, a resident of Hampton, Va., since 1998, and a longtime former resident of Newtown, died August 30 at his residence, with family at his side. He was the husband to the late Evelyn (Valentine) Verry. Born in Providence, R.I., he was one of two sons born to Mildred (Carpenter) and Edwin Verry.

Mr Verry had a wonderful career in the tire industry, before joining the family business (104 Store) in 1980.

The Verrys were longstanding residents of Newtown, where they both were very involved in their community. They lived at 63 Main Street in the building that was once the Beech Memorial Library. Mr Verry was active in civic affairs, including being a member of Newtown Hook & Ladder Company and the Newtown Ambulance Association. He was a former Scoutmaster of Troop 70, a Little League manager, one of the Board of Directors of Newtown’s Borough District, and a founder of the Newtown Labor Day Parade.

The Verrys were members of the Newtown Congregational Church before transferring membership to Hampton,  where they moved to be closer to family.

He leaves to cherish his memory son Jeff and wife Nancy, mother of Michelle Sherer, and her husband Nathan, and Jeffrey White; Beth Verry, mother of Jeff Verry, Jr, Erick Verry, and his wife Courtney, and Kristen VanDyke, and her husband Jamie; ten greatgrandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spent many hours storytelling with them. In addition to the love of his life, his wife for 64 years, his brother, Elmer, also predeceased Mr Verry.

He will be sadly missed at The Chamberlin (a senior living community) where he was known for his contagious smile, loving and caring nature, and quick wit.

A memorial service will take place at Zion United Methodist Church, 2109 Seaford Road, Seaford, Va., Friday, September 11, at 11 am, with Rev David Magruder and Rev Tommy Markham officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Food Closet, c/o Zion United Methodist Church, 2109 Seaford Road, Seaford VA 23696.
