To the Editor:

On Friday, September 2, at 4:10 pm I was walking down Mile Hill from South Main.

An ambulance with lights and siren going was coming down the hill from the direction of Fairfield Hills. Drivers did not react to get out of the way even though there was plenty of room to move to the right.

The ambulance continued up the hill towards Main and had to remain in the lane facing downhill traffic. Fortunately, a large flatbed truck at the top of the hill facing the ambulance had just entered Mile Hill and pulled over to allow the ambulance to continue all the way to Main.

Drivers need to:

1. Be more aware of surroundings;

2. Do everything possible to move out of the way of speeding emergency vehicles.

Thanks to the skills of the ambulance driver and the flatbed a real catastrophe was avoided.

Hopefully the ambulance got to the emergency in time, in spite of the poor attention, reaction and driving skills of all those in line.
