The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will present Jim Laurino painting a landscape in oil on Wednesday, September 14, at 7:30 pm, at The Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street in Newtown (at the flagpole).

This demonstration is open to the public and admission is free.

Laurino began painting as a teenager and was fortunate to receive basic instruction from noted marine painters Carl G. Evers and Christopher Blossom. He went on to study painting, design, and color theory at the University of Connecticut.

Through additional workshops and self-study, Laurino cultivated a unique and recognizable painting style, well suited to portraying the classic New England landscapes he is noted for.

Outdoor painting is a passion for this artist, and his best work is done, in his words, “leaning into the shade of an old barn, or working trailside on an ocean overlook.”

Laurino constructs frames for all of his paintings. Made of reclaimed wood material, the handmade frames create a rustic window into each piece, subtly complementing his work.

A brief write-up of Laurino’s approach to painting and framing was featured in Plein-Air magazine’s December 2017-January 2018 issue.

Laurino enjoys participating in competitive plein air painting events whenever possible. His impressionist style paintings are in numerous private collections, and he exhibits in galleries throughout the Northeast. In addition, he is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgments.

Jim lives in Litchfield with his wife, son, and their yellow lab Paisley. When he is not working en plein air, he works out of a home studio.

Reservations are not taken for SCAN programs but additional information is available at SCANart.org.

Outdoor painting is a passion for Jim Laurino, whose “Sisters Farm-Gabriels, N.Y.,” is shown here. A 16- by 18- oil on canvas, this work was created for the 2022 Adirondack Plein Air Festival last month.
