Pushed Off Road

Newtown Police report Paul Basso, 64, of Newtown, operating a 2006 Pierce fire truck from Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company, was traveling eastbound on Blackman Road turning left onto Tunnel Road at 2:24 pm August 20. Linda Morgese, 80, of Newtown, operating a 2007 Toyota Rav4, was stopped in the southbound travel lane of Tunnel Road waiting at the stop sign for traffic to clear to make a left turn onto Blackman Road. While turning left, Basso's vehicle collided with Morgese's vehicle, pushing it off the roadway.

No injuries were reported. Morgese's vehicle was towed.

Basso was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Sienna Strikes Grand Marquis

Newtown Police report Deborah Ann Giza, 52, of Monroe, operating a 2015 Toyota Sienna, was parking in the lot of 228 South Main Street at 2:56 pm August 23. Marlene Stebulis, 70, of Southbury, operating a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis, was parked in a space in the same lot. Giza struck Stebulis' vehicle.

A passenger in Stebulis' vehicle was treated on scene by EMS but was not transported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Evading Vehicle Sought

Newtown Police report that a 2022 Toyota Sienna owned by Jane Brady of Sandy Hook was parked on the side of the road on Church Hill Road facing eastbound at 10:47 am August 26. It was struck by an unknown vehicle described by witnesses as an old model pick up truck, either gray or white in color with a bed cover. The unknown vehicle continued to travel eastbound on Church Hill Road after striking Brady's vehicle.

Collision On Church Hill

Newtown Police report James Adams, 32, of Waterbury, operating a 2016 Toyota Corolla, was exiting a gas station on Church Hill Road to head eastbound into the right turn only lane of Church Hill Road at 11:51 am August 27. Danielle McCarthy, 36, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2025 Jeep Wrangler, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road in the right turn only lane. Adams entered the lane and struck McCarthy's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Adams' vehicle was towed.

Adams was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way from a driveway.

Backed Into Car

Newtown Police report Terrence Commodore, 31, of Meriden, operating a 2008 Nissan Armada, was parked in a space in the parking lot at 228 South Main Street at 7:08 pm August 27. Sharon Kish, 53, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Honda Fit, was parked and idling in an adjacent spot. Commodore attempted to reverse from his spot and struck Kish's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Kish's vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

One Injured In Collision

Newtown Police report Anthony Cardillo, 48, of Seymour, was stopped in traffic southbound on South Main Street at 8:26 am August 28. Shana Raymond, 35, of Monroe, operating a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek, was stopped in traffic ahead of Cardillo. Raymond started forward but then stopped, and Cardillo rear-ended the vehicle.

Raymond was transported to Danbury Hospital with a suspected minor injury. Raymond's vehicle was towed.

Cardillo was issued a written warning for following too close.

Evading Driver

Newtown Police report that a 2026 BMW X5 owned by Joseph Barranca of Sandy Hook was parked unoccupied in a parking spot at 79 South Main Street at 2:07 pm August 28. When he exited the business, he noted damage to his vehicle. There were no video cameras that caught the incident.

Police closed the case unless more information becomes available.

Ford Truck Hits Land Rover

Newtown Police report Christopher Capozziello, 61, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2002 Ford F350, was backing out of a parking space at 144 Sugar Street at 2:45 pm August 28. He backed into a parked, unoccupied 2025 Land Rover Range Rover owned by JP Morgan Chase Bank.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Evading Charge

Newtown Police report Thomas Epting, 53, of Southbury, was taken into custody by Newtown Police Department on August 29 after being located and detained by Southbury Police Department on an active arrest warrant from Newtown.

Epting was processed and charged with operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, evading responsibility for property damage, and following too close.

Epting was released after posting a $10,000 bond with a court date of September 14 in Danbury Superior Court.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Michael Marucci, 58, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan, was traveling on Wasserman Way at 9:39 am August 29. He was traveling behind a 2017 Lexus GX operated by Victoria Goldberg, 59, of Sandy Hook, who was stopped at the stop light at the intersection of Wasserman Way and the Interstate 84 Exit 11 ramp. Marucci rear-ended Goldberg's vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Marucci received a verbal warning for following too close.

Witness Reported Incident

Newtown Police report Peter Berg, 51, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta, was backing out of a parking space in a lot on Keating Farms Avenue at 2:24 pm August 29. He backed into a 2024 Mazda CX-5 owned by Toyota Lease Trust. Berg did not realize he struck the vehicle. A witness reported the incident to police.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Hit Railroad Bridge

Newtown Police report Joel Andino, 38, of Allentown, Penn., operating a 2025 Peterbilt box truck, was traveling southbound on Currituck Road at 9:41 pm August 30. Andino attempted to go under the Housatonic Rail Road bridge and the top of the box section of the vehicle struck the bridge. Andino continued to travel southbound and the top portion of the box section was ripped off.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Andino was issued an infraction for failure to obey signs and markings for exceeding vehicle height of posted clearance.

Failure To Appear Charge

Newtown Police report on August 31, Annamaria Pompa, 65, of Sandy Hook, was taken into custody on an active arrest warrant for second-degree failure to appear.

Pompa was processed and held on a $25,000 bond with a court date of September 1.

Collision In Parking Lot

Newtown Police report Thomas Robbins, 32, of Bethlehem, operating a 2021 Ram 3500, was backing out of a parking space in a lot on South Main Street at 11:28 am August 31. He backed into a parked and unoccupied 2018 Hyundai Tucson owned by Laura Zhunio-Rios, 42, of Danbury. Robbins entered the business and notified the owner he struck her vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
