Nighthawk Boys’ Soccer And Girls’ Cross Country Teams Post Victories

Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer, field hockey, and cross country teams all began regular-season competition on the road this past week.

The soccer team came back to tie Newington 1-1 at Farmington Sports Arena on September 9. Curtis Verdi knotted the score, off an assist from Manuelle Adomako, on Newtown’s last shot of the game.

In their second game of the year, the Nighthawks visited Joel Barlow of Redding and came away with a 5-2 on September 12. The Hawks did all of their scoring in the second half. Adomako scored twice, and Johnny Celli, Connor Muir, and Ryan Payne also hit the back of the net. Gjin Abazi assisted two goals and Payne and Muir also recorded assists.

In field hockey action, the Nighthawks traveled to Fairfield Ludlowe on September 9 and fell 3-0. The Nighthawks had their home opener, against Longmeadow of Massachusetts, postponed due to thunderstorms.

Newtown’s cross country teams visited Pomperaug of Southbury to take on the Panthers as well as Immaculate of Danbury on September 12. The girls beat Pomperaug 24-33 and Immaculate 15-50. Keira Budge was second overall in 18:09, Grace Lyons finished in 18:27, Clara D’Amico in 18:48, Grace Chiriatti with a time of 19:02, and the next four Nighthawk finishers were within a few seconds of each other: Nadia Andrew in 20:11, Annabelle Foley with a time of 20:12, Britta Petersen in 20:13, and Jessica Zhang in 20:14.

The boys were edged by Immaculate 27-28 and fell 22-37 to Pomperaug. Soheib Dissa finished first in 14:49, Noah Masotta in 15:27, Stephen Sibley with a time of 16:29, Orion Lowery in 17:09, and Adrian Totir in 17:11. Brian Sibley clocked in at 17:13, and Mitchell Greenhaw finished in 17:20.
