The Newtown High School Marching Band & Guard performed in its first competition of the 2022 fall season on Saturday, September 10, at Bethel High School and earned first place.

The 43-member ensemble placed first in USBand’s Class 2 Open division, with a score of 77.6. This season’s show is titled “The Circles All Around Us.” The band and color guard performed in choreographed formation among several sleek, circular backdrops that convey the show’s theme of expanding one’s circles of community.

Before the competition, band and guard members performed the show at half-time of the Friday night home football game, between Newtown and Greenwich.

This weekend, the band and guard will not be competing. Instead, they will rehearse additional elements to be added to the show, with the guidance of band Director Aaron Ovsiew, Assistant Band Director Chris Carley, Visual Director Caty Whaley, and several other staff members who have been working with the band and color guard since summer.

The Newtown Marching Band & Guard is set to perform on Sunday, September 18, at the Newtown Arts Festival at 10:15 am. Upcoming events include the annual Joseph P. Grasso Marching Band Festival, where eleven area bands will compete at Blue and Gold Stadium on Saturday, October 15. More information about the Joseph P. Grasso Marching Band Festival will be in upcoming print editions of The Newtown Bee.
