Cross Country Teams Off And Running

The cross country season is underway. Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ squads both had their season-opening meet pushed a day due to weather forecasts, and both squads visited Brookfield on September 14.

Newtown’s girls defeated Brookfield 20-42, Weston 15-50, and Joel Barlow 16-47.

Overall, Clara D’Amico was second in a time of 22:10, Kendyl Morgenstern third in 22:25, Lauren Jacobs fourth in 22:27, Grace Lyons fifth in 22:42, Grace Chiriatti seventh in 23:09, Keira Budge eighth in 23:25, and Britta Petersen tenth in 23:38.

The NHS boys beat Brookfield 23-36, defeated Weston 19-44, and were edged out by Joel Barlow in a 29-28 setback. Newtown’s top seven times are as follows: Soheib Dissa 17:23, Noah Masotta 18:59, Henry Prout 19:41, Stephen Sibley 20:03, Evan Chaudhary 20:05, Curtis Shaw 20:34, and Andrew Arena 20:35.

The Nighthawks visited Bunnell of Stratford to take on the host Bulldogs and Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on September 20.

In the girls’ race, the Hawks defeated Bunnell 16-46 and Kolbe 15-50. NHS had the top four runners as D’Amico led the way in a time of 21:08 and was followed by Jacobs in 21:11, Morgenstern in 21:22, and Chiriatti in 21:23. Budge placed sixth in 21:49, Nadia Andrew came in seventh in 21:51, Petersen was ninth in 22:13, and Jessica Zhang came in tenth in 22:18.

The boys beat Bunnell 19-42 and Kolbe 24-35. Dissa was tops overall, winning his first varsity meet in 16:49. Masotta finished in 18:27, Prout in 18:49, Sibley in 18:58, Shaw in 18:52, Arena in 18:55, and Chaudhary in 19:22.
