After gathering outside Fraser Woods Montessori School on September 20, students and faculty sang “Light A Candle For Peace” in honor of International Day of Peace.

International Day of Peace was celebrated by the United Nations on September 21 this year. With the day falling on a Saturday, Fraser Woods Montessori School and other schools around the world instead celebrated on the day before, when students were in school.

The entire school community formed a circle in an athletic field on the school’s property. School music teacher Yun-Kyung Kim and chorus teacher Francine Wheeler then led the school in singing “Light A Candle For Peace.” As they sang, the teachers and students completed hand motions to the words of the song.

“Light a candle for peace. Light a candle for love. Light a candle that shines all the way around the world,” the group sang while swooping their hands in large encompassing circles.

School Principal Chris Robertson told the gathered school community that peace is about action and justice.

“We all have a responsibility to bring peace around the world,” Mr Robertson said. “... Let us be mindful of how we bring peace in our own lives and to each other.”
