Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team remained unbeaten with a 94-82 win at New Milford on September 24. Brianna Deierlein broke the team record in the 100-yard butterfly event, finishing ten seconds faster than the next swimmer in the event, to win the race in 58.50 seconds. Deierlein shattered a record that had stood since the late 1990s, Coach Becky Osborne said.

The Nighthawks wrapped up the team win in the 500 freestyle race and exhibitioned the last four races. Newtown finished first in all but one event, taking second in the 100 butterfly and earning top two and top three in several races. “Team swam well. We are nursing some midseason injuries, but hope to be back at full strength for Immaculate/Bethel this Friday,” said Osborne, whose squad is slated to host the meet at 6 pm.

In the 200 medley relay race, Shayna Millard, Grace Fischer, Cate Fischer, and Diellza Limani finished first in 1:04.41.

The 200 free was won by Deierlein in 1:56.40, and Anna Shew placed third in 2:15.69. Alexa Kwarcinski won the 200 individual medley in 2:24.33. Limani and Millard finished one-two in the 50 free with times of 26.53 and 27.27.

In the 500 free, it was another strong overall Nighthawk effort. Limani won the race, making her final touch in 5:41.25, Shew was second in 5:52.72, and Maura Daly placed third in 6:03.68.

The 200 free relay was won by Cate Fischer, Millard, Kwarcinski, and Deierlein in a time of 1:47.96. The relay team of Smiley, Lilian Accettella, Arena, and Angela Wennerholm came in second in 2:01.82.
