Young Adult Book Discussion: Liz Arneth will meet with young adults in grades 5-8 on Thursday, October 18, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm, to discuss the novel, Dave at Night. Gail Carson Levine, the author of Ella Enchanted, writes this fictionalized account of her own father’s experiences growing up in a Hebrew Home for Boys. The main character in the book, Dave, is torn between the rich nightlife of Harlem in its heyday and the friends he has in the orphanage. Multiple copies of the book are available at the children’s desk.

Young Adult Drama Workshop: Young adults, ages 11-13, are invited to sign up for a four-part drama workshop Thursday afternoons (4:15-5:30), October 25-November 15. The workshop is designed to introduce participants to basic acting techniques through the use of theater games and scene work. Cynthia Wagnerman, a published playwright, will conduct the workshops. Enrollment is limited to 12. For more information call, 426-3851.

Adult Programs

Computer Classes: A hands-on beginners course taught by The Newtown Computer Training Center will take place Saturday, October 6, from 9 am to noon. Key and mouse skills will be covered as well as an introduction to the Internet. An intermediate class will also be offered on Saturday, October 13, also from 9 to noon. Registration is required for both classes and a $10 fee is being collected for the intermediate class.

Newtown Historical Society: The Newtown Historical Society is sponsoring a talk on John Adams: Forgotten Founding Father, on Tuesday, October 9 at 7:30 pm. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served.

No Batteries Required: Jim Makowicki, a toy maker and author of Making Heirloom Toys, will speak about his latest projects on October 10 at 7:30 pm in the Meeting Room. He will also be exhibiting his work at the library for the month of October.

Rubber Stamping, Basics and Beyond: Come join the fun of this hands-on class and learn some techniques as you are introduced to the wonderful world of rubber stamping. Jackie Bache of Southbury will be conducting the workshop on Wednesday, October 11, at 7:30 pm. There is a $3 supply fee and the class is limited to 15 students. Sign up at the circulation desk or by calling the library at 426-4533. Everyone will go home with two or three finished projects.

Rare Book Dealers To Talk: Don’t miss an afternoon with Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine Stern, two authors and rare book dealers. They will speak about their newest book, Bookends, a dual memoir and chronicle of the cultural changes of 20th Century American life. The talk will take place on Saturday, October 14 at 2 pm in the meeting room. Refreshments will be served.

Daytime Book Group: The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw will be discussed in the special collections room on the third floor from 1:00 to 2:30 pm, on Monday, October 15.

Yoga: Ricky Ayers is once again offering a yoga class Thursdays from 4:45-6:15 pm. Call Ricky directly for more details at 757-4150.

Evening Book Group: The evening book group will be meeting on Thursday, October 18 at 7:30 pm. The book to be discussed will be River of Fortune by Roger Masters. The book can be requested through interlibrary loan. Please call the library at 426-4533 if you have any questions.

Partners in Crime: This Mystery Book Discussion Series will explore the relationships of different mystery solving couples. The October 16 discussion is on Bitter Feast by S.J. Rozan and on October 30, Evil Angels Among Them by Kate Charles is the subject. Discussions will take place at 7:30 pm in the special collections room on the third floor.
