Scholarships Listed At

Newtown High School Career Center

Information on the following scholarships has arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Please note that these scholarships are not just for seniors; many are for underclassmen as well. Ron Brown Scholar Program for African Americans – This scholarship is for African American High School seniors who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, community service, and financial need. A minimum of ten students will receive $10,000 annually for four years. The recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend a four-year college or university. More information is available on their website at www.ronbrown.org. The application must be postmarked by January 9, 2002.

CHSCA Scholar Athlete Scholarships – The Connecticut High School Coaches Association will award its annual $1,000 scholarships to high school scholar-athletes. Graduating seniors from CIAC member schools who meet the following criteria are eligible: 1) earned at least one Varsity letter; 2) achieved a minimum of 3.0 academic average; and 3) demonstrated exemplary citizenship and leadership. One male and one female scholar athlete will be nominated from Newtown High School. The Coaches Association will present six $1,000 scholarships to the top three males and three females selected by the non-Coaching Committee. Application must be returned to the NHS Career Center by January 4, 2002.

DeVry Institute Scholarships – These are for high school students graduating in 2002. DeVry will award two full tuition scholarships at each of its US Institutes. In addition a $1,000 per team Dean’s Scholarship will be awarded to qualified students. Applications and ACT/SAT scores must be postmarked before March 8, 2002. Most scholarships are, however, awarded on a first come first serve basis, s o apply early. More information can be found at www.devry.edu.

Weller Medical/Health Sciences Scholarship – For high school seniors who are full-time students at Newtown, Joel Barlow, Masuk, Shelton, or Trumbull High Schools. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage and financially assist a student upon graduation who has chosen a course of study in the field of Medical/Health Sciences. Healthcare careers acceptable under this program are nursing, therapy, medical technology, paramedics, and other licensed healthcare workers who provide one-on-one training. Programs leading to MD or PhD degrees are not acceptable. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the first three cumulative years of high school and an SAT score of 975 or higher. The award is $6,000 or 50 percent of the cost of tuition for the training program, whichever is less. Financial need will not be a factor in determining the award recipient. The Weller Instrumental Music Scholarship – For high school seniors who are full-time students at Newtown, Joel Barlow, Masuk, Shelton, or Trumbull High Schools. Applicants must be accepted and subsequently enrolled at a four-year fully accredited college or conservatory as a music major with concentration in instrumental music. Financial need is not a requirement and shall not be considered. The award is for $4,000. Application must be submitted to the Career Center by March 15, 2002. It will then be sent to the school’s Director of Instrumental Music. The director may select no more than two finalists from their school. Finalists must audition on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at Fairfield Public Library. More detailed information is available in the Career Center. See Mrs McEvoy with any questions.
