To the Editor:

My name is David Schill, and I am running for Legislative Council representing District 2. My wife, Sandy, a native Newtowner, and I have lived in Sandy Hook for the past 19 years, where together we raised our daughter, Amelia, a Newtown High School graduate now in her Junior year in college.

As vice president of a large civil contractor, I have held the role of problem solver on many major construction projects. Additionally, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Construction Industries Association, the Navel Maritime Consortium, and the Associated Builders and Contractors. With my extensive background in business and management, I feel my skills would benefit the Legislative Council.

Working on government projects I have observed the fiscal irresponsibility that often occurs at the state level. As a member of the Legislative Council, I will represent the people of our community with sound judgment and ensure restraint. With the pressures of the state budget crisis and the ever-expanding tax burden, it is even more important that our local finances be managed responsibly. It will be my goal to ensure that the residents of Newtown obtain the best value for their tax dollar. I will work with the school system to provide the highest quality education to our children. This will help to attract new families to our town and improve property values. In addition, I will promote economic development while maintaining the home-town feel of our community.

Examples from the Labor Day Parade to the new Community Center are among the many things Newtown has to offer. With great schools, an engaged community and exceptional services, Newtown will continue to thrive. It would be my privilege to give back by serving on the Legislative Council, and I humbly ask for your support.

Sincerely,

J. David Schill
