Christie's Will Kick Off Football Memorabilia On Friday September 24

LONDON - Christie's South Kensington's second football (soccer) memorabilia

sale of the year will be held September 24 at 11 am. A large selection of

medals, caps, shirts, programs and memorabilia relating to football heroes old

and new will be offered with estimates ranging from œ100 to œ3,000.

One of the highlights of this sale will be Billy McNeill's last nine-in-a-row

League Championship medal, which is expected to fetch œ2/3,000. The medal was

donated by Billy McNeill to the Jim Baxter Testimonial Dinner where it was

bought by the present vendor. A pair of the legendary Bill Shankly's football

boots, which were last worn in 1974 when he managed Liverpool F.C., will also

be offered with the same estimate.

There will be no substitute for the international caps and medals that will be

offered for sale. A blue Scotland v. Wales, Northern Ireland and England

international cap, 1957-58 (œ600/800), a 9 karat gold F.A. Cup runners-up

medal, 1953-54 (œ1,2/1,800), both awarded to Tommy Docherty, and a George

Young Scotland cap (œ500/700) will be included. The `White Horse Final' was

the first F.A. Cup final to be played at Wembley in 1923 and represents a

significant time in the history of football. A gold pocket watch (œ700/1,000)

awarded to Harry Nuttall of Bolton Wanderers at this final will be obtainable,

as well as one of his international caps (œ400/600).

Various shirts will also be offered -- an F.A. Cup shirt worn by the

Manchester City player Ernest Toslend in 1934 and a 1979 F.A. Cup Final shirt

worn by Sammy Nelson both carry estimates of œ1/1,500. A red Spain shirt worn

by Alfredo di Stefano in a match versus Wales in 1961 carries an estimate of

œ2/3,000 and a Kenny Dalglish Scotland shirt will be offered at œ700/1,000. A

white England Youth shirt, No. 17, worn and autographed by Michael Owen is

estimated at œ700/1,000 with the proceeds of this sale being donated to the

East Herringthorpe Carousel Club, a community-based charity in Rotherham.

Warneford Cresswell, of Everton F.C., will be represented by his 1933 F.A. Cup

winners medal, which is estimated at œ3/4,000. Both of his Division One

championship winning medals from 1927-28 and 1931-32 are estimated at

œ2/3,000. A 1930-31 Division Two championship medal will be offered at

œ1,5/2,000, while five of his international caps are expected to fetch

œ250/350 each.
