Outfitted in black uniforms with pink numbers and a ribbon logo — with libero Emily Daoust sporting an all pink top — the Newtown High School girls’ volleyball program did more than just dig the ball en route to a three-set win over visiting Pomperaug of Southbury on October 2.

This was the Nighthawks’ Dig Pink match in which team parents collected donations for Susan G. Komen For The Cure as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The program pulled in more than $800 during the evening.

“We try to do it every year. Especially coaching high school girls, I think it’s a good thing for them to do as much as they can to help find a cure,” Newtown Coach Tom Czaplinski said.

As for the match, the Nighthawks won by scores of 25-6, 25-17, and 25-13. Gabby Soltis led the way with five of Newtown’s dozen aces to go along with 32 assists and a trio of digs. Amaro Beard-Galati logged eight kills and a pair of aces; Liz Anesi and Allie Nowacki both had six kills; Daoust had two aces and collected eight digs; Addy Cordova registered an ace, three kills, and three digs; and Zosia Teraszkiewicz tallied three aces and nine digs. Gianna Galassi was injured during the match, putting a damper on the win. Czaplinski is hopeful for a speedy return to the lineup.

Newtown defeated host Weston 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-18) on September 28. In that match, Teraszkiewicz racked up 13 kills and ten digs; Galassi had 12 kills and a pair of digs; Daoust had two aces and nine digs; Soltis compiled an ace, three kills, 43 assists, and three digs; and Beard-Galati had an ace, nine kills, and two digs, and couple of blocks.

The Nighthawks had a strong showing in the John Jay Tournament in Cross River, N.Y. on September 30. Newtown won ten sets in pool play action and reached the tourney semifinals before falling to eventual champ and familiar Connecticut nonconference foe Darien.
