*Art For The Tercentennial: C.H. Booth Library, in honor of the town’s Tercentennial, is featuring art by Newtown students of all grades celebrating favorite Newtown places.

The exhibit is open during regular library hours.

Children’s Programs

*Story Hour Registration: Register for the next series of story times October 17-26 in the children’s department.

Sessions are offered for 2 year olds on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10 am, and classes for 3-5 year olds take place Tuesdays at 11 am; Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1 pm; and Saturday at 11 am.

Registrations forms will be available on October 17 in the children’s department.  No phone registrations will be accepted.

*Writing With Mrs Arneth: “Creative Writing: Poetry” will be offered on five consecutive Mondays – November 7 to December 5 –from 6 to 8 pm each week.

Liz Arneth, a retired English teacher and Newtown resident, will lead the series of workshops for ten students in grade 6 and up.  Participants are expected to attend all five sessions, and preference is given to Newtown residents.

All sessions will allow time for writing and sharing poems as well as one-on-one communication between adults and young people.

There is no fee for this workshop. Sign up at the main floor circulation desk or call to register.

*Comedy and Magic Show: Full Effect Productions will present “Magic, Myth and Monsters” just in time for Halloween on Friday, October 21, at 4 pm, in the library’s meeting room.

This not so scary program of magic, comedy and ventriloquism is sure to entertain. It is recommended for ages 4-10. No registration required.

*Nutmeg Book Discussion: The next book to be discussed in our Nutmeg series will be City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau.

Students in grades 4-6 are invited to participate. The discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 26, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, in the story room at the library.

The city of Ember was built as a last refuge for the human race. Two hundred years later, the great lamps that light the city are beginning to flicker. When Lina finds part of an ancient message, she is sure it holds a secret that will save the city. She and her friend Doon must decipher the message before the lights go out on Ember forever!

Young Adults

*YA Book Talk: Let’s talk about Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes. Our next Young Adult book discussion will be held on Wednesday, October 19, from 4 to 5 pm, in the Story Room.

The kids in Mr Ward’s English class have come to love Friday Open Mic Days, when all the students can speak from the heart in poetry and not be mocked or judged. Instead, they draw closer together.

These monthly book discussions for readers in grades 5-9 are co-sponsored by Reed Intermediate School, and books are available at both libraries.  Sign up at the Booth Library Main Floor Circulation Desk or call 426-4533.

*Young Writers’ Salon will be held on Friday, November 4, at 7 pm.

Sign up for the third annual evening of reading by young people in grades 6-12.

The program is being expanded this year to include both poetry and other original creative writing. We invite you and your friends to read to the audience of parents and friends in the coffeehouse atmosphere.

Adult Programs

*Book Discussions: Upcoming programs include Monday, October 17, at 1 pm, The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri; and Thursday, October 20, at 7:30 pm, The Church of Dead Girls by Stephen Dobyns.

*Celebrating Polly: Former longtime resident Polly Brody will be celebrating her new book, The Burning Bush, with a reading and reception on Sunday, October 16, at 3 pm.

All are invited to attend.

*Navigating the College Admissions Process: Experts from BHA Consultants will visit the library on Tuesday, October 18, at 7 pm, to lead a free informational seminar for students and their parents.
