Volunteers Needed For Strides Walk

WESTPORT — Volunteers are needed for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer five-mile walk on Sunday, October 16, beginning and ending at Sherwood Island State Park.

Registration starts at 9 am and the walk begins at 11 am. Last year nearly 4,000 walkers participated in Making Strides, Fairfield County’s single largest breast cancer walking event. The event raised approximately $500,000 for breast cancer research, education, advocacy, and community services that benefit area breast cancer patients and their families.

Volunteers are needed to greet walkers, cheer them on, help with registration, parking, logistics, and cleanup. For more information, contact Carol Frattaroli at 203-563-1530, or via e-mail at strides_westport@cancer.org or online at www.acsevents.org/strides/ct/westport.

To join a Newtown team that is walking, call Avance Esthetiques Day Spa in the Sand Hall Plaza, 270-8911. Spa owner Judy Volpe has been fielding teams for 12 years with as many as 75 walkers, raising as much as $13,000. She finishes the easy one-to-five-mile walk with a tailgate lunch for her walkers.

This year in addition to free booklets about breast cancer and self-breast examination, Ms Volpe is selling “What Cancer Cannot Do” bookmarks for $1.50 and sport socks for $5 a pair at her spa with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
