Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team remained unbeaten both in matches and in games this fall. The Nighthawks blanked Pomperaug of Southbury and Notre Dame-Fairfield each by 3-0 scores in this past week to improve to 8-0 overall. Newtown had to fight its way past host Pomperaug, winning the first game 25-22 and the second behind some extra effort, 29-27, before closing out the September 30 match with a 25-16 victory. Against visiting Notre Dame, the Nighthawks had a much easier time, winning 25-14, 25-7, and 25-15 on October 3. In the win over Pomperaug, Emma Herring had 11 kills and Carly Iwanicki had seven. Jess Lynch had 20 assists. Abbey Doski compiled 34 digs and Wurtz had a dozen digs. In the win over Notre Dame, Doski and Courtney Escoda had six and five service aces respectively. Lynch had 16 assists, and Meghan Logan added nine. Iwanicki and Doski combined for 13 digs. Eight different Hawks earned kills in a 29-kill effort. The Nighthawks were scheduled visit Brookfield on Wednesday (after The Bee sports section went to press) and return home Friday, October 7 to host Oxford at 5 pm.

Oxford’s visit to Newtown High marks the third annual Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Match put on by the rival South-West Conference Schools. It gets started with the 3:30 pm junior varsity match.

Dig Pink attendees are asked to wear something pink and contribute to breast health awareness. More than $3,000 has been raised through the joint efforts. All of the contributions will assist Side-Out in its mission to raise money and awareness about breast cancer through volleyball.

All money from the donations, raffle, concessions, and special pink hair feather applications will go to the Side-Out Foundation. For information, and to make a donation, call Donna Herring at 203-258-1441 or email her at runrupert.com. For more information on Side-Out and Dig Pink go to www.side-out.org and www.digpink.org.
