Altered Books On View Ahead Of Library Program

Katie Stevenson describes altered books as “a discarded, unwanted, used book that nobody thought had any value until someone came along who had vision and faith that it could be changed into something vibrant and alive.”

Stevenson is an illustrator, painter, sculptor, designer, and teacher who has been working professionally for over twenty years. She has led altered book workshops at libraries around the state, including previously at Booth Library, where she has also led creative workshops with other media.

Stevenson has additional been the lead on a featured program at Ridgefield Creativity Conference, "Advancing Creative Thinking: Imagination to Innovation," hosted by The Aldrich Museum in April 2012. "

A collection of Stevenson’s altered books is on view through the end of the month in the lower entryway of C.H. Booth Library, where Stevenson will coincidentally be leading her next altered books workshop later this month.

The 90-minute workshop is scheduled for Monday, October 24, beginning at 5 pm. There is no charge and all materials will be provided. See our online calendar at newtownbee.com for details.

Stevenson’s art is adjacent to a temporary exhibit of work by Larry Clifford, who takes the idea of altered books in a completely different direction.

Stevenson's art can be viewed any time the library is open: Monday through Thursday, 9:30 am-8 pm; Friday and Saturday, 9:30 am-5 pm; and Sunday, 12-5 pm.

Stevenson takes discarded books and transforms them into new objects of art using everything from paint, pencil and ink to glue, cloth, found objects and more.
