Newtown Hook & Ladder Fire Company #1 hosted a free open house event on October 1.

A stream of kids and adults enjoyed a number of activities, including hands-on time with various safety vehicles. Turnout was good despite the weather, which ended up remaining clear despite a forecast threatening rain.

There were games, giveaways, activities, demonstrations, and more.

Among the offerings was a Firefighter Training Course that will encourage all ages to go through the challenge as fast as possible and knocking down flames with a fire hose.

Attendees were offered a chance to “Save the Firefighter”; observe a Connecticut State Police K9 demonstrating the ability to detect chemicals used in arson fires; a Hurst Tools demonstration, including extrication skills; and an Egg-speriment, where participants built devices or containers to hold an egg that was subsequently dropped from the company’s Ladder Truck to see if the egg would stay intact.

There was also a Fire Safety Skills Challenge; opportunities to practice the proper use of an extinguisher; and training on Hands-only CPR — learning how to save lives through this technique.

Additional invited guests and vendors included Newtown Underwater Search and Rescue, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance, Newtown Police Department, and The Exceptional Sidekick service dogs.
