With the change of seasons, billions of birds are traveling right now for a better chance of survival. The fall migration period began September 1 and will continue through November 15. “Newtown Ranked ‘Safest City’ For Second Year,” by Jim Taylor, published October 3. Connecticut recently released its annual crime statistics report which, according to Newtown Police Chief David Kullgren, shows crime is down locally. “Halstead Memorialized During Annual Connecticut State Firefighters Service,” by Shannon Hicks, published October 2. Four men including the late Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Chief Bill Halstead were memorialized last Sunday afternoon during a brief but poignant ceremony at Connecticut Fire Academy. “Swierbut And Defense Shine As Nighthawks Blank Second Straight Opponent,” by Andy Hutchison, published September 30. Newtown High School’s football team blanked visiting Pomperaug of Southbury 49-0, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on September 30. Andrew Swierbut scored three touchdowns — one on a 44-yard punt return, another on a 58-yard interception run back, and yet another on a 39-yard reception. “Newtown Scouts Globe Trotting For Blair Atholl Patrol Jamborette,” by Alissa Silber, published October 4. The Blair Atholl Patrol Jamborette in Scotland took place July 19 to 29 to the delight of Scouts BSA members in Newtown and worldwide.
