Hit Turning Into Driveway

Newtown Police report Ehsanullah Azai, 21, of Danbury, operating a 2003 Honda CR-V, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road and attempting to turn left into 66 Church Hill Road at 5:14 pm October 1. Daniella Crisci, 16, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2019 Honda HR-V, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road. Police say Azai turned in front of Crisci’s vehicle and Crisci’s vehicle struck Azai’s.

No injuries were reported. Crisci’s vehicle was towed.

Azai was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at a private intersection.

Trailer Hit Truck

Newtown Police report Bryce Bergman, 21, of Clayton, N.C., operating a 2019 Ford F150, was traveling eastbound on Hall Lane at 1:59 pm October 2. Christa Ledley, 35, of Gaylordsville, operating a 2019 Ram 1500, was traveling westbound on Hall Lane in the same area. Police say Ledley stopped to allow Bergman to pass on the narrow road, but as Bergman passed, the left rear corner of a trailer attached to his vehicle made contact with the left rear corner of Ledley’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Bergman was issued a written warning for failure to drive right.

Mirrors Struck

Newtown Police report Robert Siraco, 39, of Southbury, operating a 2018 Ford F250, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way at 2:43 pm October 2. John Gilbert, 54, of Danbury, operating a 2023 GMC Savana, was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way. As the vehicles passed each other, the driver’s side mirrors of the vehicles made contact, damaging both.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Threatening Charge

Newtown Police responded to the report of a neighbor dispute at 5:51 pm October 4. Following an investigation, Stephen Mullaney, 56, of Sandy Hook, was placed under arrest and charged with disorderly conduct, second-degree threatening, and third-degree intimidation based on bigotry or bias.

Mullaney was released on a $100,000 bond with a court date of October 18.

Drinking While Driving Charge

Newtown Police report that at 8:20 pm October 6, an officer traveled to New Haven Correctional Center to take Kenneth Donnelly, 48, of Portland, into custody on an active arrest warrant. Donnelly was charged with operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, operating with a suspended license, operating without minimum insurance, and drinking while driving.

Donnelly was released on a $10,000 bond with a court date of October 17 in Danbury Superior Court.

Failure To Maintain Lane

Newtown Police report Jennifer Correa, 35, of Bethel, operating a 2008 Honda Pilot, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 9:55 am October 8. Ylber Selmani, 53, of Southbury, operating a 2015 Hino 195 tractor trailer, was traveling southbound on South Main Street. Police say Correa swerved into the southbound lane and struck Selmani’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Correa’s vehicle was towed.

Correa was issued an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Avoided Fox, Hit Guardrail

Newtown Police report Janet Varza, 70, of Southbury, operating a 2022 Subaru Impreza, was traveling southbound on Glen Road at 1:15 pm October 8. A fox reportedly ran into the roadway and Varza said she swerved to avoid hitting the animal. Police say the front right corner of the vehicle made contact with a guardrail off the right side of the roadway.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Varza was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Backed Into Each Other

Newtown Police report Ashley Schaffer, 24, of Monroe, operating a 2019 Lexus Nx 300, was backing up from a stall in the parking lot of Big Y Grocery Store on Queen Street at 2:43 pm October 8. Diane Leaman, 74, of Newtown, was backing up from a stall in the same lot. Both vehicles made contact.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

No Insurance, No License

Newtown Police report Cristyan Clase, 25, of Ansonia, operating a 2011 Subaru Legacy, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road in the area of Zoar Road at 11:47 pm October 9. Police say Clase lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center yellow line, and left the roadway.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.

Clase was issued a misdemeanor summons for operating a vehicle while under suspension and operating a vehicle without minimum insurance.

Newtown Hook & Ladder, Newtown Police Department, a Nuvance ambulance crew, NJK Sunoco, and myriad utility crews all responded to Wasserman Way just east of Craft Street late Saturday morning, October 7, after a car crashed into a utility pole there. The sedan appeared to have been traveling west on Wasserman when the driver lost control just before 11 am. The vehicle went off the northern side of the road and crashed into the pole, with the car coming to rest on the western side of the pole. The driver was transported to the hospital. The damaged pole was repaired later that afternoon. Additional details were unavailable as this week’s paper went to press. —Bee Photo, Hicks
