The Temperaments And The Arts

If the little girl in the front row tends to be an aggressive leader, should she be cast as a mighty queen in the class play? If the shy boy in back is a daydreamer, should he be allowed to sit and knit all afternoon?

It might come as a surprise, but a Waldorf teacher would probably answer Yes to both questions. Waldorf schools recognize that each child’s personality reflects a particular temperament and learning style, which tends to evolve as the child develops. So as to maximize each child’s potential for learning, Waldorf educators strive to “teach to the temperaments” in all subjects and permeate them with an artistic sensibility.

On Monday, October 20, from 7 to 9 pm, veteran Waldorf teacher Magda Lissau will address this subject in her lecture, “The Temperaments and the Arts,” at Housatonic Valley Waldorf School. Suggested donation is $10, and reservations are recommended.

Ms Lissau will address questions such as: What are the temperaments? How do Waldorf schools teach to each child’s temperament? Which arts correspond to the developmental factors at work in children at different ages?

The public is invited to attend the presentation on one way of understanding human development which is garnering renewed interest from psychologists.

The Housatonic Valley Waldorf School is on Route 302 in Newtown, about one mile east of the Bethel border at the corner of Taunton Hill Road. For information, directions or reservations call 364-1113.
