Members of multiple agencies all responded to a serious accident on South Main Street shortly after noon on Tuesday, October 20.

Newtown Police were first dispatched at approximately 12:10 pm to the area of 160 South Main Street (Route 25), near Red Rooster Restaurant, for a multiple vehicle accident with injuries. Botsford Fire Rescue, Newtown Hook & Ladder, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and a paramedic were also dispatched.

According to the police report, a 2010 Ford Fusion SE that had been traveling north on South Main Street was stopped, waiting to make a left turn into the restaurant’s parking lot. Colleen Oaks, 47, of Trumbull, was driving the Ford.

A noncontact vehicle was stopped behind the Fusion.

Meanwhile, a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Michael Rivera, 26, of Shelton, was also traveling north on South Main Street, behind the noncontact vehicle. The bed of the Silverado was loaded with stump grindings, and the truck was towing a work trailer carrying a stump grinder.

The unidentified driver of the noncontact vehicle told police they observed that the Silverado was not going to stop in time. The unidentified driver then made an evasive maneuver, driving off the roadway and onto the northbound shoulder.

The trailer being towed by the Silverado struck the left rear side of the Fusion.

The Silverado then crossed the center line, and entered the southbound travel lane, traveling northbound.

At that time a 2007 Isuzu NPR box truck operated by Rogerio Martins-Dasilva, 56, of Bridgeport, was traveling south on South Main Street. The Silverado struck the box truck head on.

The Silverado and the Isuzu both went off the roadway, onto the southbound shoulder, following the impact.

Martins-Dasilva had to be extricated from the box truck by firefighters.

Rivera and Martins-Dasilva were both transported to the hospital for serious physical injuries.

Oaks was treated at the scene.

All three drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the collisions.

Newtown Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team responded to investigate. Connecticut State Troopers from the Truck Inspection Unit also responded to examine the vehicles involved in the crash.

Town of Newtown Highway Department personnel set up a detour onto Pecks Lane for both directions of travel from South Main Street.

South Main Street was reopened around 4:30 pm.

All vehicles involved in the crash were towed from the scene.

The accident is under investigation. Enforcement action was pending as of October 21.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or the operation of the vehicles involved before the crash are asked to contact Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841.
